Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director, Data Analytics and Services, the Data Architect is responsible for the design, development and deployment of solutions in support of a broad range of data assets related to the student experience, financial management, employee metrics, and budgetary analysis. This role combines a strategic perspective with an emphasis on delivering solutions. The Data Architect will work closely with the other members of the BI development team building robust data pipelines bringing both structured and unstructured into the analytic environment. The Data Architect will also coordinate and communicate with various Tufts departments regarding data capture and curation strategies. 


While the primary focus of this role will be on administrative needs, there will be an opportunity to collaborate in other academic spaces in support of broader strategic programs including but not limited to geo-spatial data, text based data, natural language query and other data sources as appropriate. The ideal individual will have a deep understanding of traditional data warehousing strategies as well as a keen appreciation of modern data architectures. 

Essential Functions: % 


Works with clients and senior leadership throughout the university to define advanced data models based on business requirements from clients. Works closely with clients to understand the business requirements and business processes. Communicates strategic data requirements and identifies sources of selected data. Reach out to sources. Gather requirements and evaluate data. Document data types, data formats, and data update cycles. Defines how the data will be stored, integrated, and managed in current infrastructure. Draws conclusions and effectively communicates findings with both technical and non-technical team members.25% 


Develop data engineering process. Outlines high level integrated designs using a standard common business vocabulary that aligns with enterprise strategy and business architecture. Develop automation of data engineering and data ingest from original data source through back-end architecture to ingest for user interface. Develop the design and architecture documentation and address data migration issues. Work closely with Associate Director to keep abreast of emerging data technologies to guide and influence senior IT leadership and clients in adopting them. Assist with establishing standards and guidelines for the design and development, deployment and maintenance of information. 50% 

Design and define data mining processes, identify machine learning opportunities, establish a roadmap to realize data mining and machine learning capabilities, and predictive analytics capabilities. 25%

Minimum Required Experience, Education, Background, And Certifications/Licenses

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science or related discipline, 8 years of related experience. 

• Strong understanding of systems development life cycle. 

• Demonstrated skills in data modeling and design. 

• Strong knowledge and background in statistics and quantitative methods. 

• Strong knowledge of a scripting languages such as Python and Node 

• Experience linking multiple data platforms containing different data types (structured, unstructured, open , social media, etc.) 

• Must be self- starter with ability and interest to learn new technology. 

• Strong communication skills with ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with clients. 

• Demonstrate creativity and innovative problem solving skills. 


Additional Preferred Experience, Education, etc. 

• Experience with database management systems (DBMS), Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL. 

• Background in data reporting solutions and visualization techniques using, Business Objects, Tableau, etc. 

• Experience with Solr. , natural language processing, and RESTful APIs.
