Summary: 

The Data Architect creates, modifies and installs applications in support of the University's Strategic Reporting and Analytics endeavor. The successful candidate will determines the data requirements of a diverse client base and implement solutions as appropriate. The Data Architect will research, design and execute solutions to address problems and inefficiencies. The Data Architect will also develop and recommend state of the art structured and unstructured database solutions for the campus. The Data Architect will work with Lehigh's software and application teams to recommend database structures based on the data storage and retrieval needs throughout the campus. The Architect works with other Enterprise Systems staff, Security Officers and Business Intelligence team to monitor our various database addressing database issues, problems, and recommendations for enhancements. They will also provide a clear overview of the institutions's data and ensure the University can consolidate multiple data sources to leverage all available data to make strategic decisions.



Accountabilities: 
  1. Identifies, inventories, understands and ensures the integrity of the University's key source data assets 
    • Participates as an ex-officio member of the Data Governance Executive Committee and the Data Standards Committee and also participates on the Information Systems Steering Committee
    • Collaborates with subject matter experts, database administrators, data stewards and others to understand industry requirements and outlines high level integrated designs to meet these requirements
    • Provides a standard common business vocabulary and data dictionary
    • Analyzes database implementation methods to ensure alignment with University policies and any external regulations that may apply
    • Assesses the impact of and test proposed changes to the University's source database applications or systems
    • Creates and enforces data integration standards with the assistance of the Data Governance Committees
    • Partners with Library and Technology Services colleagues and other University stakeholders to ensure all data/data sources needed for organizational reporting are defined and incorporated into the appropriate data mart
  2. Designs, implements and manages architectural solutions for the University's Analytics and Reporting needs 
    • Works with the Vice Provost of Institutional Research and Strategic Analytics and associated team to define the strategic data requirements
    • Works with the Library and Technology Services Security team to define the security requirements of the University's Analytics solution to ensure that data is treated as a protected asset and adheres to current policies
    • Identifies, evaluates and recommends best in class hardware and/or software reporting solutions to achieve Lehigh's desired Strategic Reporting and Analytics goals
    • Provides insight into the changing database storage and utilization requirements for the University and offers suggestions for solutions
    • Plans and installs upgrades of database management system software to enhance database performance and maintain current security standards
    • Monitors and reports system resource consumption trends to assure production systems meet availability requirements
  3. Defines, builds, tests and maintains the reporting software infrastructure including design, publication, and communication of data structures 
    • Develops database architectural strategies at the modeling, design and implementation stages to address University requirements
    • Works in partnership with management and staff as necessary, to ensure the accurate collection, analysis, and distribution of historical and predictive customer data
    • Maintains the integrity and security of the University's data repository
    • Designs database structures to support established business requirements, ensuring system stability, security, performance and reliability
    • Documents and communicates database schemes, using accepted notations to provide a clear overview of the information architecture
    • Creates and manages data models for applications, metadata tables, views and related database structures
    • Develops data quality metrics that identify gaps and ensures compliance with standards across the enterprise.
    • Provides system and functional specific knowledge transfer to University staff
    • Provides leadership in establishing analytic environments required for structured, semi-structured and unstructured data
  4. Maintains technical proficiency via training and/or self-directed efforts 
    • Maintains competence through training, research, user groups, conference, and workshops
    • Researches current industry trends
  5. Contributes to the Library and Technology Services organization, Lehigh University, higher education and other communities by participating in service activities and providing education and training on topics related to Enterprise Systems 
    • Collaborates with other Library and Technology Services members to problem solve, identify opportunities for improvement, and to share knowledge and information
    • Serves on Library and Technology Services and University committees
    • Participates in Library and Technology Services and University events and activities that benefit the team and the organization's knowledge, skills and morale
    • Writes and presents papers, presentations, and workshops/seminars at professional conferences and to the University community
    • Produces supporting materials for events such as written documentation, online tutorial videos and podcasts
    • Participates in professional activities that contributes to the individual and team's knowledge and skills
    • Provides individualized training as needed

Qualifications: 
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field required; advanced degree in Applied Mathematics, Business Analytics, Statistics, Machine Learning, Computer Science or a related field is a plus
  2. Five to eight years related work experience
  3. Solid experience with Data Warehouse and BI systems; extensive experience for collecting business requirements from customers, and transforming the requirements into DB data processes and data schema 
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  5. Solid writing ability and organizational skills
  6. Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, county and national criminal background checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance. Based upon the requirements of the position Lehigh may also request credit history reports, motor vehicle checks and professional license/certification verification

Special Considerations: 
  • Occasional evening, weekend hours to complete system upgrades, meet project deadlines or solving user problems
  • Occasional travel is required to attend conferences
  • Required to be on call

FTE: 100%

Grade and Hiring Minimum: 
12-40 Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary adjustments for internal candidates comply with University policy. For more information contact Human Resources.
